Main & Side Dishes - Southern Vegetable Dinner

Fresh Garden Vegetables

Along with greens, peas, and cornbread, Mom would always serve fresh vegetables (from the garden if possible). Corn would be made as creamed corn, corn niblets, or corn on the cob. The other vegetables would be washed, sliced if necessary, and put on the table raw.

Usual additions:

  • Fresh peppers (cayenne, longhorn, finger hots, or jalapeños)
  • Fresh tomatoes, sliced
  • Large sweet onion, sliced or wedged (Vidalia if available)
