Titles:
King of the English ( 839 - 858)
King of Kent ( 856 - 858)

In his youth, Ethelwulf performed brilliantly as a general for his father Egbert. Ethelwulf's forces defeated the sub-king of Kent, with the result that Sussex, Essex, Surrey and Kent were added to the kingdom of Wessex.

As king of Wessex, Ethelwulf worried increasingly about the Danish threat. After the winter of 850, while part of the Danish forces were engaged at Sandwich with Ethelwulf's eldest son Ethelstan, the main Danish army marched through Canterbury and London. Ethelwulf and his son Ethelbald defeated this army overwhelmingly. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the battle resulted in "the biggest slaughter among the heathen host that we have ever heard tell of to this present day."
