Source #1: Biography of Tunis Hood

Tunis Hood settled in the Shenandoah Valley section of Virginia, and later moved to Mecklenburg Co., N.C. Elizabeth Harrison was his first wife, and mother of all of his children.

In August, 1771, Tunis Hood sold his land in Frederick Co., Va. Two deeds are recorded there in Deed Book 15, at page 81, He moved to Mecklenburg Co. in early 1772. In Mecklenburg Co., he purchased 227acres on McAlpine Creek. Family tradition advises that Tunis and members of his family were affiliated with the old Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Mint Hill. He had forsook his Quaker upbringing and adopted Elizabeth's (his wife) religion.

The grave of Tunis Hood has been located in an old abandoned Rock Spring grave yard near Hood's Crossroads, marked only with a crude flint headstone on which are carved the letters "T.H."
Eliazabeth Harrison Hood died prior to 1790, as evidenced by the initial federal census of that year for Mecklenburg Co. Tunis Hood remarried sometime between 1790 and 1797, to Jane Jonis, a widow.
He was approximately 79 years old at the time of his death.

Tunis was a public official of District 15, Mecklenburg Co., during the period of 1775-1785, an office comparable to a present day County Commissioner. Tunis (as well as his son,Tunis Jr.) acquired through grants and purchases, several thousands acres of land, during the period from1772-1790. Along with John Spring, Jr., Thomas Polk and his son Tunis Jr., Tunis was one of the largest landowners and slaveholders in Mecklenburg Co. during the latter part of his life. Both Tunis and his son, signed their Wills "Tunas". However most public, church and family records give the spelling as "Tunis".

Marker erected by family members in 1989 states, "Tunis (Theunis) Hood Progenitor of Hood Clan in NC. Born 1719 Kingston, NY under English Crown. A fifth-generation American, he moved to Mecklenburg Co., NC in 1775. Died 1797 under 2nd President John Adams. Wife Elizabeth."
