Signer of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320.

Sir William Oliphant played an important role in the struggle for Scottish independence. He fought at Dunbar in 1296, was captured, imprisoned for a year and then released to fight for King Edward in Flanders under the command of the Earl of Atholl. In 1304 he commanded Stirling Castle for the Scots and held out against Edward with a very small garrison until they were forced to surrender with honour. In 1320, after being set free, he signed the Declaration of Arbroath, a letter from Scottish barons to maintain Scottish independence and support Robert the Bruce.

Sir William died at Aberdalgie in 1330.
