Misc. Notes
The historians Saxo and Svend Aggesen wrote in the 13th century about the clever, pretty and virtuous queen, Thyra Danebod. She is said to be the one who built the Danevirke, the great earthen defensive fortification between Denmark and Germany, but historians have denied this. Archeology has shown that the Danevirke was built in three phases between 737 AD and 968 AD. So, Thyra may have ordered the last phase of construction in the 10th century.
The historians tell that the German emperor Otto I courted Thyra, but she gave him no answer for a year, and in the meantime she had the Danevirke erected, so that emperor Otto was not able to conquer the country.
It was also told that Thyra was the Christian who set a good example for her son Harald. It could easily be the explanation why Harald was kindly disposed toward the Christian church and later was himself christened.
Thyra “Danebod”, the pride of Denmark, “tanmarkar but”, the mother to Denmark.
Names which symbolize that she was very much liked, and that she did her best for Denmark.
