New London, Connecticut town birth records (Barbour Collection) has a record of his birth on January 23, 1679/80. He was the son of Captain James Avery & his wife Deborah Stallyon. He was christened February 28, 1679/80 at First Church of New London, New London County, Connecticut. He was selectman, 1731, 1735, 1737; surveyor, 1736, and served as a Justice for New London County. He was clerk of the North Society (Groton) church. In 1724 and 1725, he was deputy to the general court; he was successively ensign, lieutenant (1714), and captain (1730). In the division of land in the northwest part of Groton (now Ledyard), as described in the record of Edward Avery, Christopher took the eastern part, and there he lived, died and was buried. "Captain Christopher Avery deceased, January 20, 1753, in the 73d year of his age”: (Groton Records). His will was dated March 18, 1752; he mentioned wife, Susanna, sons, John, Christopher, Nathan and Jacob; daughters, Abigail Allyn, Priscilla Breed, Hannah Gallup and Temperance Morgan. Granddaughter Prudence.

In 1888, some of Christopher Avery's descendants set up a brown-stone obelisk on the east side of Avery Hill, Ledyard (formerly the North Parish of Groton) not far from his former home. (Now called Hale Cemetery). The front bears this inscription: “Christopher Avery, 1680 - 1753. His Four Wives”. His Daughter, Temperance, and her husband William Morgan were buried in the same lot.

Married 2nd Prudence (Payson) Wheeler, April 1, 1714. She was the daughter of Deacon John Payson and Bathsheba Tileston and widow of Richard Wheeler. Children; 5. Priscilla, who m. Joseph Breed. 6. Isaac, who m. Susanna Elderkin. 7. Hannah, who m. BenAdam Gallup 8. Jacob, who m. 1st Elizabeth Avery and m. 2nd Sylvia Eddy. 9. Temperance, who m. William Morgan (Both were Rev. War Patriots).

Married 3rd Esther (Hammond) Prentice, daughter of Nathaniel and Mary (Griffin) Hammond and widow of Samuel Prentice. No children by this marriage.

Married 4th Susanna Baker. No children by this marriage.
