Matric. (Matriculation) pens. (as pensioner into Cambridge University) JESUS (college), Lent (Winter Term), 1618-9. Son of Bennet. Baptised at Widford, Hertfordshire, Aug. 5, 1604. B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) 1622. Probably in Holy Orders. Lived for a time at Nazing, Essex; and, as assistant at Mr Thos. Hooker's school at Little Baddon, 1629. Went to Holland, 1630; and to New England, 1631. Minister at Boston, 1631; and at Roxburgh, Mass., 1632-90. Best known for his labours amongst the Indians, and his translation of the Scriptures into the language of the Massachusett Indians. Died May 20, 1690. (D.N.B.; J. G. Bartlett.)

Known as "Apostle to the Indians". Arrived in U.S. in 1631. Became Pastor of Roxbury MA Church in 1641. Established Roxbury Latin School in 1645. He founded at Natick, MA, the first Indian Church in New England. Completed the Indian translation of the bible in Algonquin and it was the first BIBLE printed in America in 1663. In 1689, he gave his new John Eliot School, seventy-five acres of his own land, "for the teaching and instructing of the Children of that end of the Town (together such Negroes or Indians as may come to the said Schoole)", in Jamaica Plains, MA.
