Misc. Notes
Some of the Children of Benjamin Pettit (1769-1831) of Spartanburg County, South Carolina

Very little seems to be known about the family of Benjamin Pettit. He was the first child born to Joshua Pettit, Sr. (1734-1786) and his wife after they and their family moved from Essex County, New Jersey to Spartanburg County, South Carolina in 1768. There is some confusion about who Benjamin’s wife was but there are several children who are generally recognized as being Benjamin’s children. I have noticed that several marriages occurred between Benjamin Petit’s children and the children of William Gowan Brashears (1741-1825) who lived in the same area of Spartanburg County during the same time period. Benjamin’s son Elijah Pettit (1795-1845) married Tabitha Brashears (1794-1883), Solomon Pettit (1797-1857) married Elizabeth Brashears (1808-?), and Jemima Pettit (1797-1854) married Solomon Brashears (1797-1857). I also believe that Ruth Pettit (1802-1890), who married Isaiah Beshears (1801-1890) was also a daughter of Benjamin Pettit.

The 1830 U.S. Census for Spartanburg County, South Carolina shows the families of Elijah and Solomon Pettit living close to each other, both on page 31, and also the families of Isaiah (Isaak) Beshears and Solomon Beshears living near each other on the very next page, indicating their proximity to the Pettit brothers. Although this is circumstantial evidence, I believe it indicates that two brothers and two sisters from the Benjamin Pettit family married two sisters and two brothers from the William G. Brashears family.

It seems fairly certain that all four Pettits mentioned were grandchildren of Joshua Pettit, Sr. (1734-1786) who moved from New Jersey to Spartanburg County, South Carolina in 1768 and was the patriarch of almost all the Pettits who lived in Spartanburg County between 1770 and 1850. Through a process of elimination of other sons of Joshua Pettit, Sr., I believe that Benjamin was the father of the four Pettits mentioned above.
I am using this as evidence to link Benjamin Pettit as the father of Ruth Pettit (my 3rd great-grandmother). -Mike Perry, 14 Aug 2013
