1754-61: Capt Militia, French and Indian War, West
1766-73: Capt Commander Ft Johnston
1768: Appt Col. of Art. by Gov Tryon to Suppress Regulators
1773-75: Committee of Correspondence and Safety, advocated independence from England
1775: Capt Led Militia company to seize Ft Johnston, Forced Royal Gov Martin to retreat offshore to HMS Cruzier. Ended royal rule in Carolina.
1775: Col 2nd NC Reg Defeated British at Norfolk
1776: B/Gen. with Gen. Moultrie at Charleston
1777-79: M/Gen Commander, War Dept of the South. The south's only Maj. General in the Revolutionary War.
1778-79: Troops lost Savannah to British and failed to win battle for St Augustine. Transferred to the North by General George Washington.
1779: Led battle for Stoney Point and Verplanck NY with Col Putnam
1779-80: M/Gen Commander of West Point NY. Transferred command to M/Gen Benedict Arnold.
1780: Served on court martial which tried Major Andre for spying in league with M/G Arnold at West Point NY
1780-1783: M/Gen on Gen. Washinton's staff. Led troops in suppressing mutinies in the continental line and civilian riots.
1783-85: Appt by Congress as member of the society of the Cincinnati to treat with Indians on the western frontier. He never went west with Comm.
1785: Received twenty thousand pounds from congress for service in the Revolutionary War
1785-86: Planter living at Howe's Point on Walden Creek and as member of NC House of Delegates
Dec 14 1786: Died on his way to Fayetteville to represent Brunswick County in the NC General Assembly
