William Gowan Brashears Sr. enlisted as a private on June 1, 1776, in Spartanburg Co., SC, in the Continental Line, Col. Thomas Sumpter’s Regiment. He also served in the War as a Lieutenant against the British in the years 1779 and 1780 under Captain Gowen, Colonel White, and General Pickens.
