The Faithful
When Eleanor died, her husband King Edward I was so grief-stricken that he ordered a cross to be erected wherever her coffin stopped on the funeral procession. There were 11 Eleanor Crosses, the last of which gave Charing Cross its name. The total cost of the crosses was about 50,000 pounds, a fortune at the time. The cross at Charing Cross is a replica of the original, which Cromwell's soldiers tore down, but original crosses are still standing at Waltham, Hardingstone and Geddington.
After Eleanor's death, candles burned near her tomb for more than 300 years.
One chronicle said about her, after her death, "To our nation she was a loving mother, the column and pillar of our whole nation."
