My GGGrandfather was the John Fletcher Perry mentioned in the will and John was the oldest son of Joseph Perry already dead by 1840 (his gravestone showed he lived from Oct. 20, 1800 to Feb. 11, 1836). It looks like the Mary Perry in the cemetery was Hugh Perry's wife since they were about the same age and buried next to each other. Hugh's will doesn't mention his wife who must have died before 1840 - Mary died in 1834. The will was written about one month before Hugh died on July 10, 1840.

The 1830 census for Fairfield county shows Hugh Perry Sr. living with his wife (Mary) and two daughters, one in her twenties and one in her thirties.

From later census info it appears that Lettice Eleanor was the one in her twenties and Margaret must have been in her thirties and handicapped to the point of needing care. In 1845, Lettice married the Daniel B. Kirkland mentioned in the will after his first wife died. It’s possible that Hugh Sr.'s son Joseph was married to a daughter of the William Holmes mentioned in the will since Joseph's second son was named Joseph Holmes Perry. Also, $6,646 was a large amount of money in 1840, it would be worth about $150,000 today (2005).

Hugh’s grave is in Perry Family Cemetery in Fairfield County, South Carolina next to the grave of his wife. Mary, and near the grave of his son Joseph.

Epitath on the gravestone reads:

In Memory of
Hugh Perry, who died July 10th 1840, aged 75 years and 5 months
“His languished head is at rest, It’s thinking and aching are o’er,
This quiet immovable breast, Is heav’d by affliction no more”
