Henry Pettit, Sr. (1763-1838) moved with his father, Joshua Pettit, Sr., to the 96 District of Spartanburg Co., South Carolina around 1768. On June 1, 1776, Henry enlisted in the South Carolina Militia (the Spartan Regiment) and served at various times under: Captains James Woods, James Smith, Henry White, Dennis Tramell, Dickson, and Willam Smith; Colonels Wofford, Thomas, Lacey, Myddleton, and Roebuck; and General Sumter. He was in the battles at Musgrove’s Mill, Blackstock’s Plantation, and Cowpens, where he was wounded in the thigh. He was also in many skirmishes and scouting parties during the war. He later moved to North Carolina.
