In 1840, Robert A. Martin’s occupation was listed as “Farmer”, and the value of the real estate he owned was $800.00. The census also indicates that he owned 13 slaves - a woman between 24 and 36 along with 7 younger girls and 5 younger boys.

By looking at the 1850 census, we can see that Robert, Jane, and their children were back living in Alabama, in Benton (Calhoun) County. If you look at where the children were born, you can conclude that Robert A. Martin and his wife Jane were living in Georgia in 1827, since their oldest child, Mary, was born there in 1827. You can then see that two years later, in 1829, they were living in Tennessee, where their son James was born. Then by 1832, they were living in Alabama, where Amanda was born, Rhadamanthus was born in 1834, Emily was born in 1836, and Elizabeth was born in 1837. Then they move to Mississippi, since Robert was born there in 1838, and John M. was born there in 1839. William was born in Alabama in 1843 so Robert and Jane moved back to Alabama from Mississippi sometime between 1840 and 1843. In 1840, Robert A. Martin’s occupation was listed as “Farmer”, and the value of the real estate he owned was $800.00.

By the 1860 census, Robert A. Martin and Jane were still living in Calhoun County. Robert’s financial status had improved considerably by then. The value of his Real Estate was $1000.00, and the value of his Personal Estate was $5500.00. They also had their 13th child, Pleasant, a son, who was born in 1853 in Alabama.

In 1861, sons of Robert A. Martin joined the Confederate Army to fight in the Civil War. John M., Robert M., William, and Rhadamanthus were all in the 10th Alabama Infantry. John M. was in Company “D”, and Robert M., William, and Rhadamanthus were in Company “G”.
