When Gilbert married Joan of Acre, he gave up the inheritance of all his castles and manors in England and Wales to her father, Edward I, for him to dispose of them as he saw fit. Edward settled them on the issue of the marriage.
Gilbert built Caerphilly Castle, in Glamorgan, which can still be seen and visited.
